Vaginal dilators play a key role in one of the most important treatment steps for vaginismus and dyspareunia, progressive desensitisation. In this therapy, dilators are introduced to help you gradually become more comfortable with touching around the vagina.
- Dyspareunia is described as the experience of pain before, during or after sexual intercourse. Dyspareunia (painful sex) can be triggered by a few medical causes, including infections of the vagina, cervix, fallopian tubes or lower urinary tract, childbirth-associated scarring, endometriosis, radiotherapy, prolapsed womb, allergies to lubricants/latex condoms or diaphragms/spermicidal creams and stress.
- Painful intercourse can also be caused by a condition called Vaginismus where the muscles of the vagina go into involuntary spasm in response to an attempt at penetration.
